From the rather unusual menu, selected toasted Padiani with prosciutto, tomato, seeded mustard mayo and emmental cheese (which we were told when asked, was a blend of cheddar, tasty and another type cheese…couldn’t recall the third cheese), served on a wooden chopping block.

Food Court

The food courts in Melbourne are pretty standard. Let’s take a look at what’s available at the food court in Chadstone Shopping Centre

First up looks like a sandwich bar. Then there is Indian. Next door sells focaccia. Followed by Chinese. The Chinese food at the food court usually serve the same dishes. There is always a Beef in Black Bean Sauce, Lemon Chicken and Sweet & Sour Pork. And you have a choice of either Fried Rice, Steam Rice or Singapore Noodles to go with the dishes. It’s westernised Chinese food. Up next is Sicily which sells beverages and cakes. Cafe Moderno is Italian – pizza and pasta. Followed by Fish and Chips. Then another Chinese. Salsa next to it, is Mexican – nachos, burritos and fajitas. Next we have Japanese, mostly run and prepared by Chinese though. Lastly we have Greek – Souvlakis. Melbourne has the largest population of Greeks outside Greece.

That’s it. One round around the food court.

Breakfast at Expresso Bagel in QV before work

They have a breakfast special, which isn’t really a good deal but it was just across the road from work. Ham, Cheese & Tomato bagel with a coffee for $7.50. Cream Cheese bagel with a coffee for $5.00. There is a variety of bagels to choose from. I picked poppy seed bagel this morning.
Bagel @ QV

Then boiled dumplings for lunch at Chinatown Dumplings on Swanston Street. I discovered and learnt to like northen Chinese dumplings (jiao zi) from a stay in China. It’s like a staple in northern China. Almost all ancestors of Malaysian Chinese are from southern China so dumplings, especially during the Spring Festival (which is how the northern Chinese refer to the Chinese New Year) wasn’t a tradition to me. The original northern Chinese dumplings contains pork and is boiled. There are more variations now – chicken, lamb, beef and prawn, fried and steamed. The classic is still the best.
Boiled Dumplings

And dumplings isn’t complete without vinegar. Black Chinese vinegar. And this is how i prepare my dumplings to be consumed…

back to work. video recording was interrupted by a stranger who, seeing that i am shooting, thought i was a tourist and offered to take a photo for me. I am never a tourist. I am a traveller.
