Shoe-tossing is a practice of tying the shoe laces of a pair of shoes together, usually sneakers or runners (as the Aussies call them), and throwing them over the cables of electric and telephone poles, so that they hang there.

There are several theories about this practice. One being an end of school or rites of passage ritual. Another is that illegal substance is sold at the property where the shoes hang.

Whatever the origin of this practice is, it is a fairly common sight in Melbourne too.
